Who Is nConnect?
nConnect Northwest is a community-focused non-profit dedicated to increasing student interest and achievement in STEM. Founded in the Vancouver, WA area, the organization brings together schools, businesses, and professionals to create meaningful connections that prepare students for the global economy. Our board, staff, and volunteers share a commitment to rigorous academics and real-world readiness.
Learn About UsConnecting classroom learning to real-world applications lies at the heart of what we do. By bringing science and engineering professionals directly into high school classrooms, we create bridges between abstract textbook concepts and the tangible challenges that drive industry today. Students gain exposure to authentic problem-solving scenarios and begin to understand how their academic efforts translate into meaningful careers. This direct connection not only deepens comprehension but also sparks curiosity, encouraging young minds to ask bigger questions and envision themselves as contributors to the global innovation landscape.
Mentoring forms the foundation of our approach to student development. When experienced professionals share their time and expertise, they offer more than technical knowledge—they provide guidance, encouragement, and a window into professional life that many students have never seen. A mentor can help a young person navigate academic choices, build confidence in challenging subjects, and discover pathways they might never have considered. These relationships often become the catalyst that transforms a student's tentative interest in science or engineering into a sustained, lifelong passion.
Career-related learning experiences open doors that traditional classroom instruction alone cannot reach. Internships, job shadows, and hands-on projects give students the opportunity to test their skills in authentic environments, building both competence and confidence. These experiences help young people make informed decisions about their futures while developing the practical abilities that employers value. By integrating career exploration into the high school journey, we ensure that students graduate not only with academic credentials but also with a clearer sense of purpose and direction.
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics represent the disciplines that will shape tomorrow's economy and society. Yet too many talented students never fully engage with these fields because they cannot see themselves belonging there. Our programs work to change that perception by making STEM subjects accessible, relevant, and exciting. We believe that every student deserves the chance to explore these areas, regardless of background or prior experience. Building a diverse and capable STEM workforce begins with creating inclusive opportunities for all young people to discover their potential.
Teachers are the backbone of educational success, and we are committed to supporting them in their vital work. By connecting educators with industry professionals and providing classroom resources, we help teachers bring cutting-edge content into their lessons without adding to their already full plates. These partnerships enrich instruction and give teachers new tools to engage students who might otherwise drift away from challenging subjects. When teachers thrive, students thrive—and entire school communities benefit from the elevated learning environment that results.
Businesses play an essential role in shaping the workforce of the future, and our partnerships with local companies create meaningful impact on both sides of the equation. Industry professionals who volunteer their time discover the rewards of mentoring while helping to cultivate the talent pipeline their sectors depend on. Companies gain visibility in their communities and contribute directly to educational excellence. These collaborations remind us that preparing the next generation of innovators is a shared responsibility that extends far beyond school walls.
Every student follows a unique path, and we recognize that one size does not fit all when it comes to preparing for the future. Our programs are designed to meet young people where they are, offering varied entry points and multiple ways to engage. Whether a student thrives through hands-on experimentation, one-on-one mentorship, or collaborative project work, we strive to create opportunities that resonate with individual strengths and interests. This personalized approach helps ensure that no promising mind is left behind.
The impact of connecting schools with business extends well beyond individual student success stories. Communities benefit when local talent is nurtured and retained, when employers find skilled workers, and when educational institutions grow stronger through meaningful partnerships. We measure our success not only in test scores and graduation rates but also in the long-term vitality of the regions we serve. A thriving innovation economy depends on a steady flow of prepared, inspired young people ready to tackle tomorrow's challenges.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of our mission, bringing energy, expertise, and real-world perspective into every classroom they touch. Whether you are a seasoned engineer, a laboratory scientist, a software developer, or a project manager, your knowledge has the power to ignite a student's imagination. The time commitment can be flexible, but the impact is lasting. By sharing your professional journey and passion for your field, you help guide a generation of future innovators toward careers that will shape the world.
